August Wrapup.

How did that happen?  We were just complaining about it being August too soon, and now look.  No more white shoes.
In the “good news” department, I have the following:

Tomatoes and cucumbers sufficient for the makings of a tomato and bread salad.  Mmm!  In addition to the very cool summer we’ve experienced here, it appears that [...]

Tastes Like Springtime.

Cakes are not my usual thing.  Neither are desserts that don’t involve chocolate.   So my hankerin’ for lemon cake yesterday was somewhat inexplicable.   I went with it anyway, and it was worth it.
I used this recipe , but after reading the comments  I added an additional egg, two tablespoons of lemon juice, and 3/4 cup flour.   (I also [...]

Cooking and Such.

I love me a good enchilada.  I made up a double batch a couple of weeks ago, and stuck one in the freezer for another day.  That day came on Cinco de Mayo.
For some reason I never seem to have enough prepared enchilada sauce on hand when the enchilada urge strikes.  A double batch takes quite [...]

No, I Did Not Finish My Hemlock Ring.

If you want to see a finished doily, go see Cookie.
I did, however, turn this:
Into this:
Recipe here.   You can also do this with regular saltine crackers.  OMG.
Happy Friday everyone!

A Fine Day.

Weekends, lately, have been rather laden with activity of the not-necessarily-relaxing kind.  Soccer tournaments, forensics meets, middle school dances, places to go, people to see…   All fine and fun in their way, but weekend time is so precious that when I have a lot of commitments on the weekend, I always feel like I’ve been [...]

How to Cook a Steak.

Steak was a staple in my parents’ dinner repertoire.  They were meat ‘n’ potatoes folk, and our little town may have supported more butchers than churches.   Given the proximity of farms – and cows – beef was a given, and although steaks were more expensive than, say, hamburger, they could still be obtained somewhat modestly.  Anyway, I was [...]

The Usual Wednesday Stuff.

This is Molly Katzen’s Classic Buttermilk Coffee Cake, fresh from the oven.    I baked this on Sunday morning, and it’s long gone.  I added blueberries.  Molly gives some other variations, all of which sound good – especially the rhubarb!
I also tried another new recipe over the weekend.  Beef and Ale Pie  from James Martin of [...]

Where’s My Mojo At?

I have to admit it – my blogging mojo is waning now that I’m on the home stretch toward a year of almost daily posts.
I’m considering where I want to go with this after the whole 365 thing comes to a close.  I’ve taken many liberties with that, in any event, but most days for [...]

Dinner, and More.

Cookie, a big fan of the Blog Swag, wondered if my 3 Things idea for staying healthy – and hopefully awake – during the winter months would involve a button.  Well, goshdarn, lookie what I made!  Have at it, joiners!  (Please save to your own server.)   It does look a bit like the business aspect [...]

Now we can get back to normal.

And I hope it’s a new sort of normal!
In celebration, I shall return to my second favorite topic – food.
Cranberry walnut muffins, anyone?

The recipe is essentially this, with a cup of chopped frozen cranberries and 3/4 cup chopped walnuts added.
Delish!
Are you making dinner tonight?
